Those rubber lines? They’re stamped June ‘85 - aka original. I’ll replace them.

Gave the outside a quick hose-off and wipedown, then rinsed out the inside with water and simple green to try and de-gas it some. Sloshing around a gallon or so of water in this is a good workout.

Also pictured: the awful red things that fall off maple trees in the spring and get everywhere

This is happening of course because the inside seems to be rusting, according to my fuel filter / carb bowls. Visual i nvestigation says yes, but it c ould be worse.

It’s hard to take a picture inside a gas tank as it turns out.

Next I’ll be rinsing it out again with more simple green and water (to remove more gas residue, as well as loose rust) , then will start the process for the POR15 “fuel tank coating” kit (I’ll detail that later) . With replacement tanks hard to find and $600+ it’s worth a shot.

Definitely seen worse rust inside a fuel tank before. I had good success with a tank coating on a motorcycle years ago, “ Kreem” I think was the brand?

I’ve got the kit from POR15, but I have heard of the Kreem brand as well; I think they’re more or less the same thing.

Would it help to hit it with rust converter first?

The kit has a strong cleaner, rust converter/etchant, and the tank coating itself, so it will be hit with converter along the way .

Yeah , that’s definitely rust.

This car sat for a long time at some point in its life I suspect, and this agrees with that (can’t photograph it, but there is more rust the further up the tank you go, which screams “condensation from sitting with not-much-gas”)

Sounds about right.
